Body piercing: Self-distructive tendencey?

I am posting this here because it is not a debate - I am not FOR or AGAINST. However, I would really like to know from some practitioners of this art (assuming there are such at RHP) why they would mutilate their bodies.

Clearly, I cannot walk up to someone on the street who has a stud through their lip, or, worse, their TONGUE!!😛😛 and ask why they would hurt and punish themselves like this - I'd likely end up with a thick lip myself! Hence this post.

Earrings, even nose rings, I can understand. Enhancing beauty, displaying your wealth, etc. But relatively worthless stuff that must really hurt like a pin through your lip and eyelids??? Can someone explain this practice to me?🙄

Actually, when you put anything through your tongue, it doesn't hurt. Well, thats how it was in my case. I probably just lost too much blood.

PS: I did not purposely do that 6 times. 😉
