If you're an absolute beginner, The Idiot's Guide to Chess is excellent (seriously).

Other books I can recommend not quite absolute beginners:

The Amateur's Mind - Silman
Reassess Your Chess - Silman
Understanding Chess Move by Move - Nunn
The Ideas Behind The Openings - Reinfeld
1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations - Reinfeld
1001 Brillian Ways To Checkmate - Reinfeld
Modern Chess Openings - de Firmian (for opening lines)

Get yourself a chess program like Fritz that can analyze your game and tell you where you're going wrong.

And use the Net - there's an enormous amount of free info out there.

Have fun,

Paul.
