Hi, I'll be in the big city soon.

I guess going to Broadway is a must. So, should I pick a musical or a play?

If a musical, then which one you recommend?

If a play, then which one you recommend?

Is there any Mel Brooks stuff going on?

Thanks,
-S-
I'd skip Broadway and go to some of the great jazz clubs out there.

Birdland is close to Times Square. There's also the Blue Note in the village. Two of the better known jazz clubs in the city. Can be pricey, depending on who's playing.

Whoa! You and I seem to have a connection which is almost gay! *groar*

Just when you posted I was checking Blue Note's calendar. Jimmy Heath's
Big Band is playing the night I'd like to go. $30 per head for table, plus
$38 for a bottle of Nero Davola, and around $60 for two dinners sounds
reasonable to me. It's pricey, perhaps, but Finland is ridiculous, man.
For the same amount I'd get 12 pints of beers, 2 kebabs with fries, and
a good night kiss from the bartender.

Jimmy Heath is all about jazz history. He's a bit elderly but still has his chops. I saw him last year, he was touring with his brother. A real top notch combo.

Heath was a huge friend of Coltrane through the good and bad.

Heath at the Blue Note - priceless! Wish I could join you.

Don't hesitate to use the subway. It's a lot safer since rb and I left town.

And if you speak Spanish.. that's a plus.

Good question: how safe is to walk around Manhattan or using the sub?
What about taxis? I do not plan to leave Manhattan, so I guess I just
have to apply common sense as in any other big city. Insider info is
appreciated though.

Yup, I do speak Spanish and yelling and cursing in Spanish is a great tool in
Northern Europe when in danger, but I am afraid it may backfire in NY 🙂

New York was made for walking and it's safe enough, unless you find yourself
off the beaten track during the wee hours of the morning. Will you be by
yourself or with a group? The subway is fine and very useful if you want to
move from midtown to lower Manhattan where Blue Man Group and some of
the jazz clubs are. Cabs are not for the faint of heart but they'll get you to
where you want to go, sometimes via the scenic route. If you're staying at a
good hotel there should be a concierge on hand to help you get tickets and
show you the ropes.

Bring money.

Yup, I've heard the US economy is in desperate need of it. I'll be happy to bring some Euros.

Thanks for the orientation 🙂
