I recently purchased something on the Internet. I paid by bank transfer. The money was sent to Germany on the 25th of August. The compnay that I sent the money to says it has not yet received it. I have sent them allthe details and they put a trace on it, . They tried tracing it all the way back to Frankfurt, where they say all transfers go through, but they were unable to find it. I have talked to my bank about this and they say if I wish them to investigate it, they will charge me a further £30 on top of the £27 they have charged me for the Royworld 'Express' transfer. I would have thought it should be me asking for my £27 refunded, as they have not delivered the service that they have paid for. It seems that they are holding my money to ransom. Where do I stand legally in this s**t situation?

It seems to me that if you're sending money, they should be able to provide you with a reciept for your records, confirming that the transfer went through. Not an "investigation", just a reciept. If they're able to provide you with that, you might be able to use it in your fight to get your stuff, or get a refund.

Your money is being invested somewhere while it's in limbo (to make more money at your expense), in the same way all the high street banks "borrow" your cash as, for example, when you make a transfer.

At the end of the day, there is effort involved however the trace is not being instigated through an error on your part (e.g. like you've been overdrawn or something - where it's in the T's& C's you will be charged). Check out the T's and C's for your account and look in detail at the charges details - they should all be laid out in there, name and shame the bank on here too whilst you are at it.
Also check out http://www.bankingcode.org.uk/pdfdocs/BANKING%20CODE.pdf if your bank is one of the main ones, they should've signed up to this and the reputational damage caused by a breach to it (you'd have to establish if they're breaching it yourself though - I'm not doing the hard work for you!) would be something they would be keen to avoid.
Statements like "We will deal quickly and sympathetically with things that go
wrong and consider all cases of financial difficulty
sympathetically and positively." are things they may need to be reminded of from time to time.
There is a section of www.moneysavingexpert.co.uk dedicated to unfair bank charges which you might wish to look at too.

I've had international wire transfers take 1 day to 3 weeks. I'd give it until friday before going ballistic.
A bank is busy earning interest on your money right this very moment, and there is not much you can do about it.
