Yeah I know this is a chess site but I am a decent to above average league bowler. I carry about 185 average. I've bowled since I was about six years old and I am considering trying for the amatuer tour. Anybody else have an interest in talking about this? I'm sure I will get plagued with the guys who like to drink beer and are not very good.

Originally posted by Bobla45Oh yeah, I remember Weber but I think Earl Anthony was a bit more of a celebrity than he was. Weber's son, Pete (a.k.a. "PDW" ) is on the pro tour. I don't know if you follow it on ESPN on Sunday mornings but they are currently showing the weekly tournaments.

You need to maintain a 200 average for 2 years to go on the pro tour.
Since I purchased a house, I have not been able to spend the $20 dollar a night plus 4 beers to bowl... I sure miss it.

1. I don't ease off the ball enough and I put a little too much lift on it coming close to the 10 pin but always hooking slightly at the end.
2. I flatten my hook to the point where I have nothing on it but I don't have enough control. Sometimes I hit my mark, sometimes it goes a little wide to the gutter.
Any thoughts?

10 pin shot is pretty hard. I move a good 7 or 10 boards to my left, and fire it right at the pin. Adjust from there. When you do this, your ball is now passing through the oil and shouldn't have time to catch.
Adjust, adjust, adjust... It was my favorite shot at one point, since I had a bad habit of leaving that pin up!
This is also good to pick up the 6-7 split!

Originally posted by Joe FistThe fact you are going through the oil and speeding the ball up should be enough... if not, you can flatten your wrist (drop your fingers) That will take more spin off the ball.

I don't like to change the swing too much, that is why I just add more power... so it wont catch. Man, you are making me want to go bowling bad!
As well as picking up 6-7 split, it will also grab the 6-7-10.
Always move a little left when your ball is missing on the left... sounds opposite, but it is true. You can even adjust your target rather than your feet sometimes. If you have a bowling bud who averages better than you, ask them for tips, but don't bug them... never use new tips in a game, practice them on onother day.

I hear you about bugging people better than you. Most of the time, they are really accommodating but it can get annoying. I don't think I try to use new tips in my games but I tend to focus on one thing (ball speed, ball lift, whatever) so the rest of my technique will just flow naturally.
I did do my second Pro/Am No Tap tournament recently. It's not really a tournament because there is no prize to be one except getting to bowl with the best in the business right now. It was fun and talk about getting some tips. The thing is though not to ask for tips but to find someone's style you like and just to study what they do. With everyone there, its hard for them to focus on you and help you.
I've got 2 700 patches here..
723 on Feb 12 2002 and 704 on November 5th 2002. My best round is 269.
When I bowled the dang 723.. I lost all three rounds! The guy threw two 300's, and finished up with about a 260 or so. My best night bowling, and I lost all 3! I wouldn't have bowled that well if he were not pushing me.
The next year, he was a team captain and asked me to join. That was cool.

There was this girl who used to lift the ball almost straight in the air. She was Asian and I started telling a friend. He said, "she must have a 12 pound ball".
Well, I wanted to talk to her anyway, so I went and asked her. The ball was 15 pounds 'heavy' is what she said.... I asked him what that means, and he said "Wow, that means it is just short of 16".
She was a cool girl, but moved away. Think her name was Soki.

Was so nervous at the end, of course the entire place is watching you, that I threw a five count on the last ball. I was lucky I kept it on the lane....

Do you bowl in scratch leagues? I am thinking about it to get my game up more but I think I need to at least be at a solid 190 average.
