Hello, hope you can help...
I am going to Canada in October/November and I was wondering if you could give me some feedback on the following questions as you do not tend to find the answers jumping out of travel books:-
1) I am looking to be in Quebec in the first week in November - does this mean snow in a big way? We have about 5 nights so I was looking to go to Quebec City then drive up the St Lawrance River on one shore, cross over at Tadoussac / Riviere du loup. Is this going to be possible in the first week of november - will the roads be ok and the ferrys working accross the river? Also my French is not the greatest, I got by in Quebec City last time but it does concern me a little!
2) If this is out of the question we a looking at possibly going to Nova Scotia instead, I would like to go to Cape Breton Island, but my Dad (4 of are going, me and the girlfriend and my mum and dad) does not think there is enough to do that time of year in Nova Scotia - is that true?
3) I will be in Vancouver for the last week in October - will there still be killer whales around as I would like to go and see them? If you had 6 days in the Vancouver area what would be the must see things to do? Spend all the time in Vancouver and the Island?
Anyway thanks for the help in advance, I am sure I will think of some other questions. Oh if you are asking why we are going at such a funny time it is so we can see the Polar Bears in Churchill.

In November you are borderline. There is a strong possibility of some snow, but it is not the snow season as such, so you'll probably be okay. The main roads will be okay. I've no idea about the ferries but I would think they are okay at this time of year. It doesn't start to get really cold until late December at least.
As for the French, you might need some where you are going (quite remote) but it's possible to get buy with basic high school french most places and in many places people will speak english a bit (especially Quebec City!).
By the way I was in Quebec City last week. There are one or two rather nice pubs there 😉

Tofino is farther away from Vancouver than is Victoria, but the scenery and the rainforest on the west side of the Island are spectacular!
ps - pradtf: are you from Vancouver too?

Last time I was in BC I never got a chance to have a look around Vancouver Island as I was on the Greyhound route east (I was trying to get into the Rockies a quick as possible to be honest), so hopefully we will get a car and have a good look round this time.

I'm glad to know that you'll visit my beautiful country!! 🙂 Fortunatly
You'll be just in time to avoid most of the snow. The road will be okay and I think that the ferry will be okay too. As for the French, it could be a problem when you'll be in the north around tadoussac and rivière-du-loup, but in Quebec City you'll be able to find some place where they can speak English. If you have the time, I suggest that you visit Rimouski. It's one of the most beautiful city in Quebec.
And if you decide to go in montreal let me know! 🙂

I do not know if we will have time to get up to Rimouski, it works out we only have 2 days for the road trip bit in Quebec, Quebec City is worth a whole day, so we will drive up to Riviere-du-Loup one day along Highway 20, get the 12:00 ferry across the next day to Saint Simon and drive down the north shore to QC again.
I spent a week in Montreal the last time I was in Canada, had a great time. I stayed in the Youth Hostel on Rue MacKay. Got very drunk in some bar just up the road from there
