Do Cd drives have problems reading some cd's ? For example not original cd's like music cd's, program cd's etc?

I know Cd players do but I though computer cd drives read everything.

I find it very strange because I have some burnt copies which the computer can read fine but then some of the more expensive cd's still burnt, it won't read.

However all my other cd drives read these cd's perfectly.

Edit: Is ACER 50x = ATAPI CD Rom 50x ?

I don't quite understand what you're saying.

You can buy those really cheap cd's for under a $1 each and they come in different colors, and then you can buy those expensive HP cd's or Sony cd's etc...

Then you burn something on those cd's.

I don't get why this cd drive won't read some of these burnt cd's when all my other cd-roms on different computers read all the cd's fine.

Lots of cd player won't read the cheaper kind of cd's but I though computers cd drive read all the cd's. I never had this problem before with a cd drive. I know cd player are picky about the cd's but I never knew cd rom drives were picky also.

Make sure you put the side with the "picture" facing up. And if that doesn't work, format your hard drive.

Glad I could be of assistance.

Are they all CDR? Maybe some are CDRW or DVR?

Oh also, make sure that you put them in the drive that says "CD" if you put them in the other slot (listed "Floppy"😉 it won't work.

Some of the cds might have just burned wrong. Sometime burned cds (music at least) don't work in some players, but work in others. Probably depends on the quality of the player/how good of shape it's in.

Don't forget to hit the "Play" button as well. That can be quite tricky for some...

Duh.......

I told you they work fine on all the other computers. It just this one. It's probably the cd drive. I'll try to get a new one. Maybe I can trade it at work for a better one.

Getting hold of good discs is easy.

Buying a good drive is not. In my experience, standards haven't been followed across the market and you won't necessarily get what you pay for. And, oddly, stand-alone players seem to be equipped with better error correction than PC drives.

Buy branded discs. Look carefully at burner reviews.

I'm thinking rbmorris's comment might be close to what your problem is.. unless you know that your drive is a CDRW..
Is your drive a CD R only? Not CDRW? The CDs that you cannot read, were they burned on THIS computer that cannot read it? if not, possibly they were burned as multisession, and they need to be closed off prior to being to read it on this CDROM, whereas other CDROMs support multisession..

edit: I have probably close to 7 CDRW and/or DVD burners in this house, I go through many many CDRs and DVD-R's in a week (10 DVDs and 2 CDRs just used today).. and I've never had an incompatibility problem.. i've heard people say its possible, but never have I come across this.. and I buy whatever CDR's and DVD-R's are available. Recommendations for a good DVD-RW/CD-RW unit should not be ignored though..

At the moment, I'm using a Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-1633S.

It's a good little drive. Handles any disc, even crap 'uns.
