If you go to another country and turn your cell phone on, but don't call anyone, do you still get charged roaming fees? Your phone does have to "roam" to find the new network in case you receive a call.
I assume the answer is no?

sometimes it's better not to have a mobile (cell) when your away.
no i'll rephrase that
it's ALWAYS better not to have a mobile (cell) when your away.
If you've got any sense do what I do. I buy a pay as you go SIM for whatever country I'm in. I've got 6 in my wallet at the min. I e-mail the numbers to anybody who may want me. If you're in a country where you bought the SIM you don't, in my experience, pay for international charges coming in to you. Let the others who want you pay.
I had a roaming phone when I was travelling extensively. One month a bill was 500 quid. Forget it. Pay as you go and don't call anybody, unless you love her that is ๐
Originally posted by mikelomAnother option is to try one of these online phone networks. Skype is the one I use. It allows you to have a phone # in certain countries. Once youre in that country you pay local charges plus the skype charge to route or receive the call. Its normally a fraction of the roaming charges.

Originally posted by trev33I disagree. You don't need to have it on all the time, but it's useful to have it in some situations, if only just in case. For example, when I went to Germany over Christmas, I gave my parents my mobile phone number so that they would be able to send a message in case they couldn't make it in time to the airport for some reason. It doesn't cost you anything if the situation doesn't arise, and if it does, I'd say it's worth the money. Also, if you have a phone with WiFi capability, you can get online for free in many places (for example, many hotels have free wireless internet access). I used to take my laptop with me on most journeys, but now that I have a mobile phone, the laptop will probably stay at home most of the times. And I didn't have any phone expenses when I was in Germany.
