As long as the opportunity exists for anyone to become the CEO of a large corporation it has to be fair.
The mistake of hiring a bad CEO could cost a company billions of dollars. The salaries paid to their CEO is the least of the shareholders' concerns. More impartant that they have the right person for the job, and often that means outbidding the competition.
On the other hand, maybe capitalism is just plain evil.
