The maximum places in Champions League that any country can have is four. These are usually the top 4 in League.

However if someone outside that top 4 were to be Champion League winners they would be entitled to defend their win so only the top 3 would qualify from the League.

Wouldn't it be funny if Everton finished 3rd in Premiership and STILL didn't get place in Champions League because Liverpool are defending champions?
Course it's very unlikely that Liverpool can become champions but then there are only 4 teams left who can...

I don't think we have to worry about this situation arising. 😉
Chelsea v Liverpool - only one result, surely.

But well done Liverpool for making it this far.

apparently as the rules stand uefa would have to request everton stand aside for liverpool, if liverpool win the competition and everton finish 4th. i heard this on radio 5 live a couple of weeks ago.
liverpool won't win though, so don't worry all you evertonians.

The winning team has no established right to defend the title. If Liverpool were to win the CL and Everton (or Bolton) finish forth in the PL then it would be up to the English FA to decide who they wanted to nominate to compete in the CL next year.
As an Evertonian this worries me, but not as much as I'm worried by the remaining fixtures that Everton, Liverpool and Bolton have.

Come on you mighty Blues.

Well, thats exactly what everyone has been saying for liverpools last two champions league opponents. Surely they can't beat Juve with such a weak and inexperienced team.. look what happened.

With Gerrard, Alonso and Cisse back in the team, anything can happen.

I still very much agree with you that Chelsea should and probaby will win the semi final but its football after all, anything can happen..
