@thane saidNot that I can execute such a philosophy, but Bruce Lee's "be like water" flexibility might cool post-midgame tensions a bit.
Eventually all moves in a game pile up against one outcome or another. Exceptional players feel this.
I think they're called "waiting moves".
But I could be mistaken. I haven't read a chess book in a long time.

@woofwoof saidA waiting move as far as I am concerned is the player thinking I can't see anything to do. I'll wait and see what my opponent does.

@very-rusty saidI believe it's something like that or maybe something more subtle and advantageous.

I seem to recall a famous GM referring to another player's move as a "high-class waiting move".
I can't remember who said it though.
(Red thumb not from me...this time. 😁)

@woofwoof saidI am surprised if I don't get a red thumb and it really doesn't matter if it is from you or someone else. I have 2 or 3 fans love giving me the thumb down, makes them feel good. Fine with me.

I don't know about you but I am not where near a GM level. A waiting move at my level I would say the guy was just waiting to see what his opponents was going to do next because he didn't have anything, or the game wasn't going according to his plan providing he even had one. 🙂

@sonhouse saidHere I thought when I saw you'd posted "Good Sonny will shed some light on chaos theory esp pertaining to chess."
@Thane
I see your profile says you live in Alaska. What part may I ask? I went to Anchorage HS, we lived in a one room cabin with no water, electricity and toilets, was fun for a teenager.
But NOOOOOOOO!
I enjoy reading your posts.
