Hi, have a few questions about chessbase and would appreciate any assistance.

1.I've been to their site and see there's a whole lot of versions.what's the best one to use,or doesn't it matter?if i use the free version what's the catch(performancewise)?

2.Where do you get games to populate your database?or must you do this manually.

3.how does the online database work?

thanks

ChessBase is awesome!

The drawbacks with ChessBase Lite are that you can't annotate the games (at least I couldn't get it to do it) and you're limited to 8000 games in a database.

I bought the Basic version of ChessBase 8 for US$150-odd which includes their 'Big Database' of 2.3 million games from 15xx to Nov 2002. Other databases are available:
1) free on the web. I've got quite a few with all positions from chess books (for instance, Silman's Reassess Your Chess and Reinfeld's 1001 series).
2) ChessBase Magazine - a bi-monthly CD with a bunch of games (usually around 10000) covering major tournaments. It also has several training sections and databases too. I get this - costs around US$100 a year and is included with the next level up of ChessBase 8. Well worth the money
3) ChessBase Training CDs - that cover specific openings or tactics. I think there's about 50 or so of these, costing around US$25 each. I've got 6 of them.
4) I'll be producing CB databases of all the Hardcore Pawn Stars sponsored tournaments (and maybe some others)

I've never been able to get the online database to work.

Cheers,

Paul.

If you've got the cash (approx US$50), I'd also recommend Fritz 8 chess engine for playing against and for analysis.

About the online database.Just make moves to get the desired position and then click on search. You will then get many games to browse through. You can also refine the search with max-min elo ratings and even names of players. But if you do that, chances are higher that no games will be found.

No - the problem is that it can't connect to the site. Now here's a weird thing - I just tried it again so I could give you the exact message - and it worked! For the first time in 4 months and no changes to any settings. Very cool.

True, sometimes I also experience trouble getting to the database. It seems to be down a lot.

I don't know about your ancient heap of chips, dmf, but I don't see why it would be a problem.I do know that you need a java-applet to view the database.Though I don't remember which.Maybe that's the problem with some people here that can't get to it?

166 PENTIUM!?!?!?! THAT'S AN ANCIENT PIECE OF JUNK!!

I don't see how you'd have any problem David. It would be more reliant on net speed I imagine. Though I guess you'd be running win 95...better send them an email before forking over any money.

it's just that whenever i read the system requirements on the side of games packaging, it's like 2000 MHz Pentium XII, with 2 teragigameg available ram, 4-D graphics engine blah blah blah...i'd be depressed without my PS2...😛

For overview, also in the historical sense, I much prefer www.chessgames.com. As for the java issue, some people don't have the Java virtual Machine when they have installed Win XP. On a P166, however, Win XP does not seem likely...
Besides, even on my 1 MBit connection the java on this page loads slowly.
