First time for this situation....I have an icon with claim win attached to it for one of my games......what shows up, if anything, on my opponents game list screen... reminders have been sent ....should I email as well.....it's really not a win situation for me....I'd like to keep the 13 game streak going but !!!

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

There are different positions on move timeouts. I've settled for claiming them if 1) you were given no warning that your opponent would be unable to move, 2) your opponent hasn't activated their vacation icon 3) you send a move reminder prior to claiming the win. This seems fair. If your opponent has been making regular moves, give them extra time or perhaps make an announcement in the general forums. What seems unsportsmanlike is to just claim the win as soon as you are able, though some claim that the time constraints are just another parameter of the game, and not playing within the parameters is grounds for a loss.

I'd have to agree with Bennett. If I'm playing with someone I know and have played a lot against, I'll give them extra time and usually will not T/O the game but in a game with someone I don't know, one warning is sufficient, especially now that there is a vacation setting.

there's always the point that we are/should be here to enjoy a game of chess. If your enjoying the game don't time out. If you think they're just refusing to move because they're losing or have got bored then go for it.
Plus, what do you get from claiming a TO? Your rating is supposed to show how good your chess is, not how unreliable your opponent is.

Many thanks for the advice.....another ploy I thought of is to check the public games and see if they are active in any games...if so why are they ignoring reminders etc.... Think I'll give another 24hrs before pulling the plug.......I'll take a hard fought loss any day over an easy win.....

Thanks

Too much rubbish has been said about T/Os not being true wins.
Yes they are.
If someone says I want to play you,and I can think of a decent move in 7 days,so please play me, and if that player abandons that game and tarnishes it by not resigning, what is the alternative?Of course there are numourus times I have not taken T/Os,but the question is:Is a T/O a full win?
I say yes.
Linda.

i also think a t/o is a full win, if you have the option to "claim the win" you've earned it 😛

Not taking a T/O after some reminders is like playing in a real life tournament and when your opponent runs out of time you tell them to go ahead and add back 10 minutes! I don't think that would happen!

Personally I think it's rude to not make a move within the time limit without setting your status to vacation or e-mailing them that you are unavailable for a little while.

true, but you still haven't addressed the points:
1) all you gain by TO is upping your rating. If you were to win the game anyway then fine, but otherwise you're fooling yourself, no?
2) you can miss out on a good game, and is that not why were are here?
As for it being rude not to move inside the allotted time, you're probably right. But some people play by looking at the board and deciding the move in seconds, others (including me in some games) have to look at the board & think about it. Sometime I won't move in some games for a week because I have no time when I can put that kind of concentration in.
I'm not trying to say TO's are bad, they're fully necessary, but is there really a need to take them unless the otehr person has abandoned the game for a long time? What do you lose by not taking a TO for 3 weeks (extreme I know)? The chance for some easy points?

i timed out one game that i was losing in. i felt a bit bad about it - if i find myself in a simlar situation i will just wait for my opponent(or resign).
also, i timed out several players after reading their profile which clearly stated 'i will time you out' - well fine then if thats your attitude then right back at ya.

i dont agree with the 'its the same as a clock' view. im not playing against a clock im playing against a person. so what if they have'nt made their move yet.
if the game is clearly abandoned i will claim a time out, otherwise i will walk down to the postoffice sothat i can send away my subscription😀
