Defrag your HDD before and after an install.

However, if you buy another 256 Ram stick, it will be pretty cheap, just make sure it is the same speed and type (DDR, SD, etc) as your other 256.

BTW, what game?

You can download freeware memory software which will help you free up some memory, but unfortunately this won't help you in the slightest. Your operating system and all the little processes that make your computer run require memory (off the top of my head, depending on what OS you run, it needs between 32 and 63 Mb of RAM to run). Consequently no matter how many memory freeer-uppers you use, you're never gonna be able to achieve over about 200 MBs and even if you did, the game would run so slow that it would be painful. Can I ask what game it is? I suggest you immediately buy another 256 MBs at least, preferably a Gb.

i'm using a laptop, so i'm sure if i'd be able to get another stick...

and the games "armed and dangerous" - seems quite tounge-in-cheek, so right up my alleyway...

You *should* be able to run it on low memory. It is a funny game, though. Wait until you get the shark gun, or the topsy turvy gun. Heh.

Hmm...trying to find a tweak guide.

If it doesn't even boot up, go and buy more memory. Otherwise, play it on a PC.

Edit - seems to be no tweak guides as of now...sorry...I'll do some serious Googling.

Using Windows? switch on task manager (ctrl+alt+delete on XP), then look at what is currently running and what memory they are using. If any process is not neccessary, turn them off from there.

But you're likely going to struggle as the OS needs memory to work, so you're bound to have less than 256MB available for the game. Fingers crossed they took the OS memory into account when giving out the specs.

When running the game, if you can that is, turn off all non-essential elements (min graphics, shading, shadows and all that stuff).

This will help you sweet bugger-all. Defrag just puts all your files nicely next to each other on your hard drive - and then a couple of hours later you will probably have fragmentation again - on the files you work on regularly, or those that are used most.
On most home PC's defrag is a waste of time.

Buy more memory!

Oh, if you are using XP or above (if you are a Windoes [😛] user), don't bother.

i comes up with a pop-up saying "you need more memory to run this peroperly. do you wish to proceed" (or words to that effect), so i click "yes" and it tells me drirect-x isn't installed properly and i have to install it properly for the game to run. do i want to do this now? so i click yeah. then it says it's installed properly. so i click run. it says it's not got enough memory, do i want to continue...i click yeah...then...nothing...nothing happens. no comptuers crashing. no games running. nothing. well, apart from me wanting to hit something.

however, it is quite lucky that it's not working as i have exams in just over a weeks time...yay...

Gaming on a PC: choose your OS.
MAC? Almost no games available.
Linux? No games.
OpenBSD? no games.
Windows: loads.

I disagree with the MAC one, in the past year, nearly every decent new game I've played has been available on MAC, including World of Warcraft, which by the way frickin rocks!
