Oh gawd. Coldplay is one of the worst bands to come out in the last few years. There songs are dull and boring. They make John Tesh seem interesting. The only band worst then them is Radiohead. Whom I hate equally. However if you an aging hippy by all means listen to that soft crap. It just proves you cant rock anymore. I'm sure you'll also want to pick up the new Backstreet Boys album too. BAM
How on earth can you say Radiohead are worse than anyone? Are you utterly devoid of any musical taste at all? Perhaps the fact that they require an ounce of intelligence to listen to and are one of the few bands around (for the last 10 years) who's depth of talent, musicianmanship and songwriting surpasses the media's ability to pigeon hole, coupled with the fact that their style changes with every album, makes them too inaccessible for your banal, mediocre likings? Please share whom you think are better and while you are at it, feel free to explain how you can rate one band worse than another but hate them equally.

It's probably due to a funny thing called an opinion. You've got one, and funnily enough other people are allowed one too! Fair enough, Canadaguy didn't really present a structured and valid arguement to why he dislikes the bands but it's still his opinion and he's entitled to it.

Can you elborate on your astounding claim that Radiohead are part of some superior musical and intellectual level that us common folk can't reach? Apart from your incredibly bias opinion, do you have any real factual arguements to support your claim of Radiohead's greatness or are you just relying on the rather insulting and arrogant comment that anyone who dislikes them is "utterly devoid of any musical taste."

Indeed, Canadaguy did present an opinion, one which basically boiled down to 'Radiohead are worse than Coldplay but I hate them equally'. Despite the fact that he made no real case for his dislike of coldplay, he then made an equally unsupported claim that Radiohead were worse, then followed it with a statement which further muddied his categorisations. If he had presented a coherrent and elaborating opinion on his likes and dislikes I would have had no problem with whatever his opinion were, even though I may disagree with it.

I don't remember saying that Radiohead are inaccessible to anyone, merely that appreciating them requires a level of intelligence which CG failed to demonstrate in his post. As you so rightly say everyone is entitled to an opinion, even be it arrogant or insulting. Everyone has the right to like or dislike whomever they choose, my comment about being devoid of musical taste was beligerent I admit, but if you read it again, it was a question, not a statement and I was hoping for some defence of his opinions to avoid me labelling him as such.

Starrman...
You can be forgiven for your surprise and your outright defensive behaviour, because I've never met anyone who actually confessed to disliking Radiohead until now. Personally, I think that Canadaguy is pulling your collective legs. Read his post again, he's deliberately inflating his opinion and exaggerating, he's trying to troll someone like you into an argument, and you fell for it. You cannot debate that one band is better than another band because as you know very well it always boils down to personal taste, and this guy is playing up on something that he knows will be personal to a lot of people. If I started a thread called, "Tool are the crappest band ever" I would get tons of people defending them, because they're that kind of band i.e. their fans are fanatical, like Radiohead fans.

Also, you don't need intelligence to listen to music. My opinion is that intelligence is the antithesis of raw music. Though music is mathematical, logical, and formulaic, none of the above enter into my mind when I listen to a particularly good song, because ideally you don't need to understand anything to enjoy Like Spinning Plates, or Rachmaninov's 3rd Symphony.

And... if Canadaguy really doesn't like Radiohead then we should capture him and do experiments on him because he's an anomaly of phenomenonical proportions.

And... if you lost your virginity during a Coldplay song you'd probably dig them even though they suck.

Coldplay sounds too much like Dave Mathews Band for me....

Radiohead is not that bad, though I wouldn't buy their CD... I prefer anything with good drums and not some untalented butt plug sitting back there playing chikaboom claps

1. Does it really require intelligence to listen to music? Would Bach or Beethoven be considered 'intelligent' music? Could not a person be profoundly moved by their music, even if they were not what we would call 'intelligent'?
2. If some music is more 'intelligent' than other music, perhaps classical music or jazz purists might be justified in looking down their noses at Radiohead fans.
3. If some music is more 'intelligent' then other music, then there are a lot of rock-ish bands that must be considered as intelligent, or more so, than Radiohead: Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Fripp/Eno (check out their mst recent collaboration), even perhaps Muse (on Absolution, at least).
4. Radiohead's true genius lay in Thom Yorke's occasional lyrical brilliance and plaintive delivery - both elements have been notably lacking in their last few albums. their attempt to become more experimental has not been successful IMHO - the above-mentioned and plenty of others do it far better.
5. it is possible to rate bands differently in terms of talent but hate them equally. for example i might hate Abba and the Spice Girls equally, but concede that Abba had more talent, and that the Spice Girls were worse.

I think it requires intelligence to create music that affects many other people. Moreso nowadays when it's so difficult to come up with new original tunes/sounds.

It doesn't require intelligence to appreciate music - the beat is part of nature, it is within us all from birth.

Not to listen, but to comprehend the music in its entirety, yes I think so. You could be moved by a piece without understanding exactly what it is about, so perhaps the emotion is available to all, but there is often more to it than that.

I believe most jazz purists think so, yes (or at least those I have met 🙂)

I agree, Radiohead are not alone in this category.

I disagree with this assessment, both in the source of their 'genius' and in the success of their latest albums. As you say, it is opinion based.

I still don't see how you can say something is worse than something else and then say that you dislike them equally. Is not their lack of meeting with your approval synonymous with your distaste for them?

and just to open myself to critisisms my musical taste range from rock to metal. yeah mostly mainstrem stuff, The last three albums I bought were
1>NIN-With Teeth
2>System Of A Dwn-Mesmerise
3>Labyrinth OST
I know its been a while since you posted this. Let me just say Radiohead sounds like Nails on a chalkboard. Thom sounds like a cat getting neutered without anesthesia. But hey thats my personal OPINION. If you like that crap by all means listen to it. Just don't go around touting them as bigger then sliced bread. By the way, if you like radiohead you should check out anything by Yoko Ono. double BAM!
