Here is a new one for me:
A plug in computer, has a PCI AND an IDE card slot on one long
board, plugs into a backplane on an industrial machine, a
reactive ion beam etcher, if you must know. It crapped out, so we
are getting a replacement tomorrow, which is no mean feat
considering it's obsolete (pentium III).
So I needed to backup some files just in case but the HD for the
plug in comp is SCSI and the old dell I used for backup was a
regular XP. So I had to take the SCSI Ataptec drive controller card
out of the machine comp, put it in the Dell, download the
SCSI drivers, install the SCSI controller on the Dell but had to use
the power supply on the machine to power up the HD but use
the SCSI cable to connect the HD to the Dell. The power line for the
HD was not long enough to come out of the Dell.
So there it was, HD dangling in mid-air, connected to both comps
And I was able to get files to the Dell floppy, smaller files, and
larger files to the Dell HD. What a kluge! It worked though.

Of course he doesn't have a problem. This forum is "General". "Help" is over there...

Just helps me think about the real problem with the system.
I ordered a new computer board and silly me, thinking I was getting
a board that was proven and tested, get a bag of parts instead.
Differant manufacturer, differant kind of plugs, its a mess.
All this so my boss can save $9,000.

Clever boy.

You should download a copy of http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
It's got all sorts of applications and tools you can use to lug data from troubled computers. Very handy.

Thanks for the link. In this case I am out of luck. Its an industrial
system with several computers and one of them only stays lit
for about 2 minutes. Its not a simple boot problem. Wish it was.
I got a replacement but I can only hope I can get it to work.
Differant Bios even. I tried to go to the company web site of the
old comp, Comark Corp., to see if they at least had some kind of
manual for the old board. I have to try to match the plugs like IDE
stuff from one to the other and come up with the right combination.
Lots of differances. And its saturday and I want to go home! Also
have to spend two weeks on a job in Toledo and want to get this
mess fixed before I leave. Just grousing.
