This is friggin ingenious: HD's have sensors inside to monitor knocks to the HD that could destroy data so when a whack is percieved, it parks the head. This clever dude used that sensor to watch out for earthquakes, not as sensitive as a seismometer but good enough to watch the spread and maybe be able to find the epicenter:
