I got this virus on my laptop last night:

http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-warns-of-fake-quotsecurity-essentials-2010quot-anti-virus-software

I read the article and recovery seems pretty simple. My question is what does the trojan horse actually do? Should I be in fear of it gleaning my personal data? I have a wireless router at home that I also run a desktop off of - is my desktop now susceptible to this virus or will it remain localized on my laptop?

Keep your computer up to date with the programs that stop these virus's! 😉

No need thanking me, it is on the house!

Thanks for that.

I'm guessing if someone came to you with lung cancer from smoking your advice for recovery to them would be to quit smoking thirty years ago.

But yeah, I did update my desktop immediately and scanned - nothing found. Just worried it might linger on the router somehow (?)

The other thing I forgot to mention was that when I attempted to run the HP recovery partition or boot from my Windows XP installation CD, the laptop would shut down within a minute or so. I double checked the power supply as well so I know that was not the source of the issue...
