Computer Shutdown

Sometimes when I shut down the computer, the hard drive light goes off but you can still hear the humming. The computer is still on and won't shut down. Then after 30 seconds it restarts itself.

How do you fix this problem?

It has happened a couple of times before but it fixed itself but now it won't shut down by itself. I have to turn off the powerbar, which is annoying to shut it down.

you could corrupt the hard drive if you shut it off with the powerbar.

sounds like something is already broken.

take a course in software engineering. it's not that simple. (ms tests everything written at the end of every day)

If this is your computer with ME, have a read of this Microsoft page.

Did you do the usual anti-virus, trojan, spyware thing?
Try getting a free copy of 'trojan hunter' if you don't know what that is, google it in. Also Ad Aware has a freebie download, anti-spyware, also Spybot search and destroy. AVG has a free anti-virus download. Try all of those before you begin to pull out your hair! If you find nothing after running all that, then windows is corrupted. XP? ME? How much stuff do you have on your comp that you want to save? Do you have a DVD burner? If so you can back everything up with something like Nero or other HD backup software, then format the puppy and re-load windows, whichever one you have, if you have ME or 98, it would be good to 'upgrade' to XP since those older ones are no longer supported by Uncle Bill.

You could try a System Restore.

Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools, and then click System Restore, then...Restore my computer to an earlier time, and click Next.
Pick a date before the problem and follow the directions.

I'm presuming this is your ME computer still.

You sure know a lot about these things. What do you do for a living Doctor?

Yes ME still. You say it as if it's the ME's fault. I think it's just this computer. The 350 Mhz never gave me a problem.

Maybe because this one was for free and I have to "earn " it.

Don't you have any other alternative to that awful ME? You may have noticed several people have said how bad it was, and it is no longer supported by Billy the clod. My buddy Leboeuf had the exact same problem on an ME machine, MS downloaded a so-called update but got them in the wrong order and we ended up having to reformat the HD and install XP, which still works ok, as well as XP can expect to work.

The stupid thing won't shut down!

I just wasted 2 hours re-installing everything, formatting, new windows etc... because I thought it would be easier then checking all those things mentioned above but same thing again.

Could it be something in the BIOS?

When it's first starting up, I hit Delete and it goes to that blue page __Bios and it has some options. Would any of those do the trick?

Edit: Alright looks fine for now. Lets hope it stays that way.

There is a really nasty virus called a root kit. It attacks the bios and leaves the system down. Try googling in root kit and see what is out there that can kill them.
Here is a link to a great site, sysinternals. Unfortunately just bought out by Uncle Bill.
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RootkitRevealer.html
This talks about how to detect the presence of a rootkit.

Sounds like you've got a virus/trojan horse type thing. Likely you've got a virus that is using your internet connection to perform some function like a denial-of-service attack on some website like yahoo or something. That's why it restarts itself because it needs to be connected to the internet to perform its task.

Run a deep scan with your virus scanner and run ad-aware and any other programs you have to clean your compy. Failing that, use System Restore to restore your settings back to a date before you started having problems. YOu'll lose all the new stuff you've put on your compy since then but you'll at least stop it from re-starting again.
Burn anything you really need to a disk and then re-install it.

Or, just take it to a computer fix it place. For 50 bux they'll figure it out.
