MY computer keeps freezing, loads and loads, sometimes it takes 10 attempts to load the computer before it loads and works ok (for a while) we have completely reconfigured the computer (think thats what its called, basically we wiped it clean of anything so there can be no viruses left) and its still the same. is it just the computer wearing out? we thought it was overheating but it happens when its just switched on so it cant be that its getting too hot (unless that it overheats sometimes and damages the comp then). Can anyone help?

It could be one of many problems. Your RAM may have worn out or something as simple as a loose connection inside. A faulty IDE cable on your hard drive could be he problem. Maybe one of your cards is loose. Perhaps it's got really dusty in there and there is a bad contact. Perhaps your CPU cooler is all blocked up with dust which would cause over heating. Especially in this weather. If you feel brave enough, it might be worth your while to take the back off and have a look at all thegubbins inside. My guess is that if you've had it a few years, it will be really mucky inside, and could do with a good vacuuming. Other problems maybe the introduction of hardware. This could be causing a conflict. Also a faulty power supply could be to blame.
If cleaning everything out and reseating all off your connectoins inside doesn't work, then there is probably hardware failure. To find the guilty component you would have to strip it down to the bare essentials, ie graphics card, motherboard, keyboard and mouse and introduce the other components one by one(when turned off!) to find where the problem lies. Hope this helps

Jim.

These days, most PCs are fitted with inferior ones.

A strong clue he gave was in the machine freezing almost immediately.

A Seasonic 500 Watt came top in a recent test.

Probably. But this is the sort of thing you should buy new.

Being told it might be 6, but i think its older than that. im sure we got it before the millenium

Edit, yeah i know you can get pcs cheaper than that i just didnt trust something that cheap to have evrything we'd need. which to be fair isnt a great deal. for a basic one to play games, etc, nothing flashy, how much are we talking? £300?

Take a look at the occasional deal offered by Dell and Mesh. £200-£400.

You won't find much better build quality.

Dell? I wouldn't touch them with my poo. I'm sure their hardware is configured to auto destruct.

Nonsense. They're still one of the most reliable makers. But if you fill them with poo, that would invalidate the warranty.
