If you find an unresponsive adult, place flat on back on a firm surface. If the adult is injured, move only if necessary, and turn head, neck and body as a unit.

1.Phone 911 or your local emergency response number, get the AED, and return to victim (or send someone to phone and get AED)

The ABC
2.Open the Airway with head tilt-shin lift

3.Check for Breathing (look, listen, feel)
If the victim is not breathing normally, provide 2 slow rescue breaths (2 seconds each)
* Be sure the chest rises with each breath
* If Chest does not rise, reopen airway, try again

4.Check for Signs of Circulation
(normal breathing, coughing, or movement)
*If signs of circulation present but no breathing: provide rescue breathing
(1 breath every 5 seconds)
* If no signs of circulation present: Perform chest compressions
Compress lower half of breastbone (at nipple line) 1 ½ to 2 inches
Rate of about 100 times per minute
15 compressions, then 2 rescue Breaths (repeat)

5.Perform 4 Universal Steps of AED Operation
a.POWER ON the AED first!
b.ATTACH the AED pads to victim’s bare chest
c.“Clear” victim while the AED checks rhythm
d.“Clear” victim and push the shock button if AED tells you to

6.If no shock advised by AED, continue CPR:
Provide 15 compressions and 2 breaths (repeat)
Check for response every 1 to 2 minutes. Continue until rescue personnel arrive.
