Why can I not play chess any more? Over the last two weeks I have turned absolutely crap. I haven't changed the way I play or anything. It just seems that people rated 1200 just see straight through my plans and counter with much better ones. I appear to have lost something.

Don't worry about it. It's probably just a phase in your chess life that will soon pass.

That happened me too. Went from 1634 down to 1370 ish with a wonderful series of 18 losses from 20 games.

I turned it round though by being much more careful. Sounds easy but isn't.

I've stuck with just a few openings too to really get to know them. And my plans have become more fluid - I used have these great freakin plans that if oppontant co-operated would work just fine but he/she seldom did 😕 but I'd persist with an unworkable attack. Now I tend to react more to their moves than I did and its helping my rating climb.

Though I should mention that my rating is probably inflated cos people are resigning against me when I get slight advantage cos they assume I know what I'm doing! 😀

I am in touch with that emotion.

I too have fallen from 1660-ish to 1460-ish in about 2 months. Tried to be clever learning Kings Gambit, Kings Indian and Sicilian Dragon as my main weapons. Trouble is, after move 5 in each opening I don't seem to know how to continue and have been taken down some untested routes by some opponents with bad results. Have acquired Nimzowitsh's 'My System' from the library. Hopefully it will help my technique and ability to plan once my memory fails me. Too many games at once hasn't helped either. My ratings graph has more fluctuations than a , well, fluctuation thing.

I know what you mean. Fell from 1547 to 1070 before finally getting my rating in control, and today it has reached 1546! One away from a record!
*bows to clapping audience*.

Edit: never mind, that was when I left the site for 3 months...

Forks, pins, skewers, discovered check, guard removal, obstruction, trapping...

Practise!

It happens to all of us, Jimmy. I was rated 2150 nearly 30 years ago but after a very tramatic divorce in my life, I gave up chess for many years. When I returned I found it hard for me to maintain an Expert rating... Now I'm rated at USCF in the 1900's 🙁

What's worse, is that my rating here has dropped below 1800. 😳

Well, I used to think I was pretty good at chess until I came to this site. It's kind of opened up my eyes a little. I'm sure i'll bounce back again. I think my main problem is being impatient. Some people I play will take one or two days to take a move and I'll look at it for 20 seconds and think yup, that's my best move. I just can't help myself.

That's me too. I'll determine to take my time, study each position, set them up on a real board, blah blah blah

Then I end up treating them like some kind of simultaneous match and blow through them in a rush…

Yup. That's the way to go. Play like a demon. onl y to blow the whole game after a couple of bevvies.
I managaed to get through to the second round of the beta banded 8X8 by getting my old chess board out. I studied it like my life depended on it, and topped the group. And it's all been down hill since.

Use the Analyze Board feature - you can make you 20 second move, and then take a realistic look at what you opponent might do in response. It's a useful tool to look 4, 5, 6 moves down the road.... (slows you down too)
