***SPOILERS AHEAD!!! BEWARE!!!***
I watched both these films over Easter. The latter I found better. Finding Nemo has a much better plot and more life-like characters.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (from now on know as CTHD) had a crap plot. The whole film evolved around making the governor's daughters life better. Finally in the end when they have taken all that trouble to help her out, Li Shi whatsit even died, she goes and jumps off a bridge leaving Lo to become a heart-broken lonely outlaw. And the question of why did she do it is left unanswered.
Finding Nemo had a much better and simpler plot: Dad loses Son and goes to find him. You could relate to the characters a lot more and I think I may have met a Crush or a Bruce at some point. Marlin, the Dad, goes to find Nemo, his Son, who has been taken by a diver for his niece. He meets loads of great characters along the way and finds a traveling companion, Dory, who suffers from short term memory loss. Some scenes are hilarious, others sad. It had everthing CTHD lacked. All in all a great film for all the family.
Finding Nemo: *********
CTHD: ***
Anyone care to disagree?
I wouldn't disagree there, I think everyone I know who has seen Nemo really likes it, and I also know people that weren't keen on CTHD.
I am not a Disney buff by any stretch of the imagination but you got to hand it to them, there plots are always rock solid and believable.
I believed in that clown fish, but the characters in CTHD were a bit mmmm..... for me.
Am I the only person who thinks Nemo is very poor?
Now, I have a 3 year old son, so believe me I am VERY familiar with the work of Pixar. (I really would not like to mention how many times I have seen Toy Story, etc...)
Anyway, even after seeing Monsters Inc for the 50th time, I STILL laugh or spot something new. Great characters, great dialogue. Basically, I'm still entertained. A top film
So to Nemo. I took my son to the cinema (a complete nightmare in itself) and hated the film. Having seen it on DVD, I still hate it. And I love the underwater world (I was a keen sport diver) - its just the stupid characters, stupid dialogue and a boring plot. Sorry.
CTHD – I never understood the fuss over this either. I was a huge fan of Chow Yun Fat when I was at Uni – I really got into Hong Kong movies. Admittedly, it was the gun movies, more than martial arts, but I was quite interested in Asian action cinema. But even so, I never went crazy about this film. Maybe no one in the academy had watched an Asian film before (unless they have seen any Tarantino films which plagiarise them heavily, but I digress&hellipπ, so they just heaped praise on it, I dunno. But it sure is one good looking film.
Ah, I was just taking a break for 5 mins, and ranting about a couple of movies has made me feel a whole lot better…π

IMHO both films were good.
Talking of movies, has anyone seen the new 'Dawn of the Dead'. Very entertaining. There is nothing like expecting a film to be garbage, and coming out very entertained. Quite a different movie to the original (really only some shared dialogue and basic plot) - but I really would say it was equally good. And I didn't expect that.

EDIT: Oh, and if you do go to see DoD, do NOT leave before the credits have rolled...bizarrely the cinema emptied when I saw it, even though the 'story' continued to unravel.

I think you'll be in the minority there Russ. Yeah, we're also collecting DVD's and disney/pixar is the main choice.
Thought "Finding Nemo" was excelently animated. Truely remarkable. But perhaps more of a family values film than some other Pixar movies to date. Watched it twice and thought it was good 2nd time around too. Got a cheap copy of Toy Story with it, so pretty chuffed about that.
As for Monsters Inc, yeah that is pretty good, but I think Billy Crystal has alot to do with that. Fav still was Lilo and Stitch. Can watch that over and over and still laugh at the same punchlines.
As for Crouching Tiger, don't know. I think at its time it was in a class of its own. Ofcourse you have to watch it with sub-titles as the english version is poor. Either way, probably not as popular now due to all the other martial arts films that have come out recently.
PS: Anyone seen The Last Samurai ? What you think ?
Originally posted by RussI have to agree with you, Russ. Nemo was by far the weakest of Pixar's efforts. It was dull and maudlin. Toy Story and Monsters Inc. were far superior to Nemo.

I have not seen the Last Samerai or Lilo and Stitch. I will soon, hopefully. π
