I have listened to him for awhile and I just can't do it. I always like other people covering his music better than his own performance. So I guess I'll give him the songwriters cred. I do enjoy "Devil Town" (still think the Frames do it better). Music is subjective though and I got opinions. I agree the documentery is very entertaining also.
On Tuesday I saw Daniel Johnston in concert. Anyone familiar with him? He's an original, that's for sure.
Originally posted by rwingettSorry to be so negative, but he has to be the worst artist I have ever heard. His music gives me a severe migraine. I don't know what idiot ever decided to give him a recording contract. He has even gone so far as to compare himself to the Beatles. I cringe in digust at the thought of that.

Originally posted by IronstarI thought he was the leader of the Union Nationale party in Quebec years ago when that party existed.

Originally posted by StTitoI can see your point. His stuff is very 'unconventional', to say the least, but at the same time it's also strangely compelling. I think his recording of 'Love Will Find You In The End' is one of the most beautiful songs ever made. 'Monkey In A Zoo' is also quite good, in my opinion. But there are many others I wouldn't give a second listen to.

Originally posted by IronstarFrom a conventional standpoint, I would agree, he is the worst artist ever. He can't sing. He can't play. At the show I was at, they let him play guitar for three songs, which, I assume, was what they figured the endurance of most audiences would be, and then they took it away from him and had the backup band handle the instruments from there on out. But it was, as I say, a strangely compelling performance. For many people he seems to touch something primordial in a sense. It's as if competent singing and playing are mere artifice, but he bypasses that surface gloss and gets right to the heart of things. I'm not sure I agree with that necessarily, but I can see how that argument could be made.

But he does seem to have a fixation with the Beatles. Not sure why.
Originally posted by rwingettYou do know the man is bipolar, right? Not that I have anything against bipolar people. Yes, I have heard from others that his performance is somewhat "compelling", if you will. His style is very surreal, though. I just can't tolerate hearing any of it.

I don't know what's up with him and the Beatles. None of his stuff even remotely sounds like them.
They took his guitar away? Did he play the piano any? I heard he could play the piano a little.
Originally posted by IronstarYes, I know he's bipolar. To say the least. I actually prefer his piano playing to his guitar playing. He only learned to play guitar because the nightclubs he played at didn't have pianos on hand. Alas, neither did the place I saw him at. So he only played guitar for three songs. They didn't exactly take it away, but I get the impression that those in charge of the tour thought it best not to tax him too heavily. Let the fans see him do his thing for a few songs and then relegate him to singing from there on out. But that's just my impression, which could be wrong.

Originally posted by rwingett"Love will find you in the end" is interesting. I've heard a few versions of him doing it, the best one on he piano. The dude has got soul to say the least. Something that is severly lacking in much of todays Pop music. I think I have a bad taste in my mouth from him also because so many of the local hipsters in my area swear that he is god on a pogo stick and that always rubs me the wrong way. These people (the scenesters, the fasionistas, I think every town has them) latch on to some music that is out of the mainstream so they can scoff at people when they obviously won't like them. I almost always rebel against the "hipster pick of the day".(sometimes, I admit, to my detrement) In the end, if it was a free show I would give him another chance.

By the way rwingett, did he play with the same backing band as in the movie.
