I picked up A Tomb for Boris Davidovich quite by accident and am finding it a ferociously humorous box of tricks. The political commissar forced to impersonate a priest in a church recommissioned as a brewery for the sake of a visiting French communist is done with amazing aplomb, the farce skating wildly atop a deeply weird nexus of Slavic paganism, Byzantine iconoclasm and a murder that happens in another story.
