Dig the nice river in the shade. Mine is about 2 or 2.5 inches deep and I can flow the water pretty fast without it breaching the river banks.
I have a kid pool near by for the hose when I don't want it running. I get the boy to go inside by saying "The water is starting to flood the neighbors, let's go in now". He loves to help me turn the water on and off, as well as make mud using a pale.
Next we're going to do Pirates. My wife got a really nice set of pirates at the thrift shop... I plan to save the fossils and the pirates can discover them while burrying a pirate chest. Etc... yada yada.
