What does "a modern equivalent of cow dung" mean?

Exactly.

Ancient cow dung didn't have the vitamin additives that it has today.

Dung developed as man's requirement for milk developed also.

Developments in animals follows suit with man's requirements.

In fact, Palynka, you could eat dung! 😀
