just curious, but i was wondering if anyone makes chess sets... if so, what kind of materials? wood? metal? plastic? carp?

it might be the fact that it's 2:30 am here and i need sleep now, but i've suddenly felt the overwhelming desire to carve a chess set out of wood. any advice will be appreciated if i still feel this way in the morning.

Being that you`re in the U.S. You could always use empty bullet casings of various calibre. Would be novel 😉

I always thought making your own chess set was a practice strictly reserved for prison inmates with life sentences.

As such, a perfect hobby for today's suburbanite.

Just like transporting rocks in your pants.

I made one once from Aluminium and brass Tubing... with a ceramic board surrounded with mahogany edging.

3/4" pipe draw cut to a decent pattern ...design one. draw file for a nice finish and lacquer it. Get the tiles for the board from any bathroom shop 1" squares.

I put ali legs on the board so it doubled as a coffee table.

That was yonks ago.

Carp?

Now that could be interesting. When you take one of your opponent's pieces, maybe you would be allowed to slap them in the face with the wet fish.

I suppose your front line would be eight prawns, and your royalty would have to be scallops (king and queen species of course - Pecten maximus and Aequipecten opercularis).

Any suggestions for the other pieces?

thats very cool.

well, it's 8am and i'm still thinking about it... don't know if i'll use mahogany or bullet casings. i think shotgun shell rooks would be nice.

i'm missing a knight from one of my sets... cat got to it. took it away somewhere. i'll start with that one.

I like the idea of carving your own pieces out of wood. The whole bullet idea seems kind of antithetical to your original idea?

I suggest this:

It even balances the game, because you get to drink up the piece you've just taken.
