A dog will fetch your slippers, run after a stick and bring it back to you. Always be there happy to great you. Cuddle up at your feet and be content.
A Cat complains....Meows if it needs its litter box cleaned, needs feeding, could care less if you even exist unless it wants something. If it wants you to pet it will let you know. Oh yes, and you best not forget to give them their treats when it is time. 😉

We have two dogs.
A rescue dog we homed after 4 years of neglect; Bonnie.
And a pampered pooch we have had from a puppy; Bella.
Bonnie is grateful for everything (even after nearly 10 years with us)
Bella doesn't stop complaining!
I'm not sure 'empathy' is the correct word here, but your story seems to prove that only the dog who has suffered can show real appreciation.
