Ugggh...Palahniuk. Another one of this new breed of writers trying just a little too hard to be edgy (Augusten Burroughs is another one). Reading that stuff makes me want to strangle the author. If anyone goes for this sort of thing, read Martin Amis. At least he's got some talent.
I'm a big fan of Dostoevsky. Absolutely brilliant.
EDIT: For something brilliant, beautiful, edgy and short, try "Hunger", by Knut Hamsun, "The Man Who Was Thursday", by G.K. Chesterton or "Waiting For The Barbarians", by J. M. Coetzee.
