Whatever happened to the days when music was made by skilful, charismatic instrumentalists, instead of the talentless computer generated crap that we hear on the radio today
or
Why limit oneself to the format of guitar, bass, drums and vocals. Why not use all of the sounds at your disposal and be truly inventive making music on a computer
I want to know what people think about modern (pop, in the broadest sense) music. Personally, I sit right between these two extremes, I love the sound of inventive, thoughtful music regardless of how it's made...
what do you think?

I am in my late 20s, so i am not that old yet 🙂, however i can not remember the last time I listened to a top 40 music station on the radio (when I chose the station). I either listen to my vast collection of CDs, of which the majority is classical but there is a sprinkling of 'world' music, jazz and blues, or i listen to the radio. The only three stations i listen to is a classical music station (majority of the time), a jazz station or a 80s-now music station which plays easy to listen to music (no teen pop, rap, or heavy rock).
To show you how different my musical taste is form most people my age, I was recently traveling on a trip business in economy class. I can not remeber the airline or flight, to many all the same. Anyway I got to my seat flipped through the magazine and was very disappointed that the opera station was only available for business or first class. Mind you all three classes had a classical music station.
So whilst I may not be a good judge of popular music today, the little I do hear does not interest me at all.

I play classical violin and listen to Techno. I think both have their place.
I give all the credit (blame) to MTV. Young people started sitting on their asses looking at big hair bands and stopped taking piano and music lessons. You think Brittany Spears knows how many sharps in a g major scale. It all became image at the sacrifice of talent.
OK, before I start sounding like some old senile grandmother, a hopeful note ( a pun intended). Does anyone listen to "From the Top" a radio prgram that highlghts young talent from all over the world. A very creative program that gives me hope about musical talent from young people today.
One other thang. I exclude the Outkast and Snoop Dogg from any of what I've said.

I agree with you Kirk, MTV culture has had a bad influence on people of my age and those younger. Music today and popular culture are both too fast paced, for the reflection and dedication required for studying music.
The best experience, well one of the best, I had in high school is spending four years studying music, learning how to play an instrument, compose, and music appriecation.
