I delivered 2 employee reviews today. Some of you may remember back in August when I begged to be banned for a weekend because I had no self-control, and was procrastinating instead of actually writing them. Well, I finally am approaching completion, and am in the meeting with the employee stage.
Both of the reviews went well today - one with someone who is an ideal employee, and another with someone performing as expected. Everyone went away happy.
But it reminded me of a strange experience I had 8 or 9 years ago. At the time I worked for a guy named Ed, a rather nice guy but way, way too hyper. You would think he was strung out on coffee or crack all the time, but it was just how he was. Ed was so hyper he talked too fast, and often didn't hear what he said.
One day we teamed up to do an employee review for someone who was having problems, and in serious danger of being fired (he eventually was). Two quotes from Ed, from the review, that he did not realize he had said:
1) "We're all just clogs in the system."
2) "Rich and I are here to ensure you fail."

When reviewing them I used the praise sandwich technique.
Although I would rather have been the meat in their sandwich.
