I believe originally Americans played football in their socks (hence the colloquial 'soccer' ).

They were embarrassed apparently about how badly they played the game and thought boots were too noisy and might attract onlookers.

It was known in the U.S. as association football, then abbreviated as "Assoc. Football" in newspaper listings, and eventually reduced to soc(cer).

I looked this up and you're exactly right. I had no idea that was the etymology of the word.
