Anyone have any idea what was supposed to be so amazing and powerful about Excalibur (the sword of course)? I read about some of the powers of the scabbard, but not the sword. Why?

I think weapons tended to be revered at that time, and one owned by a king, particularly one which won a major battle or two got even more acclaim, and a legend built up around it.

The story of the sword seems to be rooted in Celtic myth, being derived from the lighting swrod of Fergus mac Roich: Caladbolg

Excalibur was said to have been created by Gofannon, God of the Underworld if I remember correctly. It is said that the whoever wields the sword could stab the ground and Gofannon would come to his aid.
