Has anyone here ever experienced this? I have one that somewhat rules my life, it takes about an hour a day. An hour isn’t long but along with everything else I do including running a home for 3, exercising a border collie rescue dog, keeping 2 gardens, one a permaculture type vegetable garden, cooking everything from scratch .... well, it’s hard to get to bed before midnight.
Perhaps exercise is low on the list for serious chess players?
@drewnogal saidWhen I was working I thought my job kept me fit plus every morning & evening I walked my Lurcher a few miles( more in summer ) since taking early retirement I had The Bungalow we just bought to fix up and the wild garden to rip out and replace (i kept the nicer plants) then out of the blue I had that HA then everything changed I had to take up serious excersice so I bought A static bike & running machine ( I do go walking outdoors but because my wife is now blind she stays home) so I tend to use my machines more, I try to do at least 1 hr a day (with 1 day off ) I even did 90 min on my bike on christmas day.

@drewnogal saidI think the use of language to describe it is interesting. One person's good habits is another persons obsession. I would guess top athletes and sports people will often be pretty compulsive. I have good habits for running until I get an injury. Once I've lost the habit it sometimes takes me a while to get it established again.

I like it better when it is so much a part of my routine to get up and run that I would find it hard to miss. Better when I'm not controlling it maybe??
Do you control your good habits or do they control you?
@drewnogal saidSounds like a good obsession especially as you age. Another good one is obsessed with eating healthy. Keeping busy [which you apparently do] is another good one, Sounds like a great life. Keep it going.

@drewnogal saidDrew, why do you force yourself to do all these things?

@relentless-red saidI feel miserable if I don’t get the exercises done, sometimes squeezing them in after 10pm but I do like the results. I feel they improve my mood and self esteem. When I was younger I wondered at what age I’d start losing interest in my body shape but see no sign of that yet. I’m highly critical of it.

@drewnogal saidThis is good to hear. As for me, I'm scattered, undisciplined, and unmotivated. Exercise is one of the things I think about more than actually do, but I have plenty of exercise books, videos, and pieces of equipment. I am a lifelong bicyclist, though (never owned a car).

Disclaimer: I am not a serious chess player. I think a lot of the top players such as Carlsen play football (soccer) and Caruana plays basketball as part of his regimen. Other GMs do look somewhat sedentary, though.
@drewnogal saidI think it's great as long as you enjoy doing it. We all need exercise. π
Being late to motherhood I went on a mission to ‘preserve’ myself as best I could. I love my independence and have a fear of losing my physical strength as I age. I’m probably physically stronger now than I’ve ever been?
@badradger saidIt sounds like a great way to look after yourself and your dear wife.

As one “matures” it often becomes necessary to try avoiding a sedentary lifestyle. For a long time I was quite active in sports, not so much with exercising, and as I moved on in life I wasn’t able to keep up with the more physically demanding sports but I do still play golf (always walking the course). We have two big dogs that need walking. Being right handed, my right arm is in good shape, with the lifting of the beer mug. We have a push mower, to do the lawn maintenance with. That’s about it for my exercising and If I say so myself, which I am doing I guess, I’m in pretty good shape, physically.π€ππ
@drewnogal saidSounds like you are still friends with your good habits and they are giving you something that you want in return for your work.

Somebody once said that you should manage your relationship with your habits like any other relationship. Notice when they are being good to you and making you feel good about yourself, but also notice when they are being too demanding and it is all about them and not about you. Particularly notice when they are getting you to participate in something that you don't want to by putting you down if you don't comply.
@drewnogal saidObsession is an interesting word here.

Including running and lifting I exercise 8 times a week. Every week. I also sleep 7 times a week and eat approximately 11 times a week (with intermittent fasting).
I don't think of any of them as an obsession. But maybe.
Mrs. Anitya drinks 96-128 oz of water every single day. North of 30 years on the trot. Now that might be an obsession.
@anitya saidon top of tea & coffee I drink 2 ltrs of bottled water every day, more on hot days & allways whilst working out.
