I've been playing a guy with 100+ points in ranking than me. There was no time bank and only 24 hrs to move. I made the last move yesterday afternoon and since I was too tired last night, I didn't move (not even turned on my computer)
.
The game was in the final stage, I had the game in my pocket and time expired this afternoon. Would you do the same my losing opponent did? (He claimed victory). Or would you be a little understanding and give a little grace time to your opponent?

I know he had the right....and after all it's only a game, for fun. At least that's how I see it. I just want to see what people in general think.

Here is the link to the game: Game 2194375

Thanks!

nope, he was right to take the timeout.
you're a sore loser buddy.

1/na means no time bank. If you wanted more time to make your moves, you shouldnt have agreed to the set up.

i think most people would have timed you out but if the time controls were pretty small there's a few who would have given you some extra time.

Thanks for your input.

I didn't want more time to make my moves. But if someone runs out of time and I'm losing, I would give my opponent a grace period. I would consider that being polite.

I don't care if I lose a game... as I said. It is a game, and I play for fun.

i agree, it's not a nice way to end a game but sometimes if your opponent just leaves the game it's the only way to end it.

you have to ask yourself, what would he do to me?
lets face it, if the time bank has been set to 0, then you's both agreed it would be part of the deal.

if you were losing and you saw the skull, what would you do?

Belgianfreak suggested using 1/7 so it doesnt look like your trying for the timeout, he has a point.

As I said before. I would have given the opponent a grace period as a sign of politeness. I've done it and I would do it again, especially if I'm losing.

playing by the rules is not impolite.

i see where you're coming from, but taking a timeout is part of the rules of the game, therefore it is not impolite, its part of the game.

I agree. It's not impolite.

Giving a grace period is polite, though. It is clear that you would have claimed victory under my opponents circumstances, and it's valid.

I appreciate your comments.

🙂 i've actually played your opponent, it was a 3/7 game though.

I found him to be both a good player, and a decent sort of guy.
he beat me fair and square in a pretty good game.

With non-subscribers only having 6 games they are not really able to wait too long so you would probably get timed out usually. If you were sending in-game messages back and forth you might be more likely to get away with it though.

His position was so very lost, the game had become trivial and a win on time was his only chance for victory. There are no brothers at the chess board, as some Russian saying is meant to go.

It's the deciding game of the World Chess Championship in 1987. Garry Kasparov vs Anatoly Karpov. Karpov leads 12-11, needing only a draw to win back his title he lost in 1986. Alas, Kasparov has a crushing position, mate is imminent. All seeems lost for Karpov.

But what is this?? Kasparov has forgotten it's his move!! He thinks it is Karpov's move. His clock runs down and his flag drops. All Karpov has to do is claim the win on time and he is World Champion.

Karpov looks up, sees his opponents flag has dropped, realises what has happened and says 'Comrade Kasparov, I think you have forgotten it's your turn to move. I will be a sportsman and not claim the win, let's play on until I lose and never ever regain my title'.

IN YOUR ****ING DREAMS!!!!!!

He says ' I claim the win on time as per the agreed rules' and 'let's go get drunk on cheap Russian vodka'

This is beginning to remind me of the 'give back the ball' controversy in football today. Giving the ball back after an injury is considered polite, even though in the rules there's no obligation to give the ball back.

Unwritten conventions are dangerous things. And I think it's safe to say there ISN'T any settled convention on timing out. Some people will leave the skull alone. Others won't. Unless you've discussed it with that particular opponent, it's hard to complain.

Having said that, the only time I got timed out was by someone who had failed to meet the time controls (which he had set) several times, and I'd let him play on. I did get pretty riled when he timed me out on the first opportunity, and flatly told him I had no intention of playing him again.
