For anyone who's got a little time on their hands and would like to delve into the world of photography and how it is used to portray starving people.

This is an excellent project which confronts subjects as "When is photography 'interest' and when is it 'exploitation'"?
Like the photographer Kevin Carter who shot the picture of the starving kid crawling around with the vulture stalking behind it. He won prizes with the photo and shocked the world, but at the same time many people were shouting: "Why on earth did you just take the photo and not help the child?"
He committed suicide (the photographer, not the child).

reminds me of the tsunami ... blair was castigated for staying on vacation ... but not by the columnists, who were all on vacation ... at least at guardian.co.uk ...

I think that, rationally, if a photographer can rally people into action he can save more people than by its direct actions. He plays a part and he shouldn't be blamed for not saving the world.

But it's a part for which I don't have the emotional detachment to play. Apparently neither had he...
