Kazan had a way of getting the most from actors and it shows in his films. You should check out some of his non-Brando films if you haven't.
My favourite actor is Marlon so any movie with it is going to have me watching it sooner or later. From Kazan I know Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (wonderful acting by Liz), East of Eden also (I also admire James Dean work), Viva Zapata! even though I don't remember much of it...

But those two movies are great movies in any day of the week!!!

Kazan didn't direct the film version of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". I never have seen "Viva Zapata", though from the sounds of it, I may not be missing anything special.

On the Water Front and a Street Car Named Desire are two must see movies for anyone. Marlon Barndo just owned those two movies. No disrespect intended for Vivien Leigh cause she was great too on the second one but Marlon was just magic.
Ahhh, Vivien Leigh. What a beauty.

Finnish and Japanese cousins. I suppose it's possible.

As far as Japanese films goes, Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu, at least, made richer, subtler and more complex films than Kurosawa. Mizoguchi at his best is, for me, about as great as cinema has ever been.

I've only seen one film by Mizoguchi and it was indeed excellent. I think the style is quite different from Kurasawa, though, so I think you're being a bit too harsh on AK who has his own much deserved place in the Pantheon of cinema greats.

I have a soft spot for Atom Egoyan.
