So I’m walking along the pavement (sidewalk) in Wells, (a historic town in Somerset, England) and this woman barks at me “you’re going the wrong way” accompanied by a sort of “WTF!” look.
I look around and I can see these stickers on the ground indicating one way only and the opposite direction on the other pavement. Then I look around and notice that more than half of the pedestrians, of all ages, are wearing masks outside the shops and avoiding each other like the plague (pun intended). One woman held a flat paper bag up against her face as she was passing people.
I just carried on walking and tried not to shake my head in astonishment and shout out that less than 10 people had died of Covid-19 the day before in the entire UK and those that did were all compromised in age or health.
More people committed suicide!
Now we can’t meet in groups of 7 or more and there is a threat that we could face a full hard national lockdown because “cases” are going through the roof even though hospitalisations aren’t moving.
The fear is getting out of hand.

Perhaps we should try to follow recommendations to the best if our ability and ignore what others do. I have noticed among my friends that we don't see the situation the same way. Some of them are convinced that every person we meet is a potential threat. It's not how I see them, but I try to keep a distance and move away if necessary. And I avoid crowds of course. Many physical shops have a hard time, it is a sad sight. And I don't really like shopping on-line.
@torunn saidAlthough I follow directions completely it's nice to have a place to laugh about them. It does look a lot more like people reassuring themselves by following rituals than science.

Wild animals that hunt prey approach from downwind. They want the wind in their face even if it is a slight breeze as they know their scent droplets can carry 100s of metres in one direction whilst being undetected in the other. It does make a bit of a nonsense of the outdoor two metre bubble, but I try and do it as much as the people around me when I am out.
@petewxyz saidWe may have to live like this for a long time and must find reasonable ways of doing it. Just being aware of the risks, I think, makes us cautious. I keep a reasonable distance to people around me, but when I pick up my great-granddaughter at pre-school and she comes running towards me, she gets a big hug!

Can we have the moderate Voices:
* We know that CoVid-19 is not a joke. We also know it is not the end of the world.
* We know that measures like mask and social distancing are heling, we also know that it puts a burden on People.
* Rules should be obeyed, and a fee is in order (I would make that one according to income. A rich Person shouldn't be allowd to break rules at a Trifle), but there shouldn't be an atmosphere of 1984.
Oh and presidents, Prime Ministers and the like should be the ones to set an example.
@ponderable saidFace masks must be kept clean the way they should and handled properly, or they might give you a false sense of security.

@torunn saidYou wearing a face mask protects you from giving it to others, if others aren't wearing it that is where the risk comes in from what I have learned. If everyone wore one and followed all the rules, we would soon see few cases.

We have what we call the Atlantic bubble and don't let anyone else in even from other parts of Canada, excluding students who are put on a 14 day quarantine.
We have a very low count and those are from people who have travelled and are placed in the 14 day quarantine right away. Those not following those rules are given big fines.
Someone has already been expelled from a college from out of Province for not following the quarantine rule. They can re-apply next year to that same college.
So being strick and keeping the bubble is working as far as people not getting Covid but is certainly hurting the economy for sure.

@divegeester saidAs recently as June, the UK had the second highest rates of death from COVID in all of Europe. To mock the concern of those same people over the virus barely two months later is idiotic.

@torunn saidThe aliens who discover earth long after we’re all gone are going to have a field day digging looking for periods of time. So here we have the Stone Age, the ice age and this looks like the mask age.

@vivify said*deaths are from anyone with a positive test in the past 30 days.

Maybe not those exact words but that’s what you read under the UK death stats. People live and people die, circle of life, why kill the economy along the way?
