Surely, you've seen these two in action. Two people who've just met each other for the first time making small talk about some insignficant subject...yet with one caveat. Each one tries to outdue the other. The conversation usually goes something like this.
Topic: Travel
"Oh you went to California? Nice, I went to San Francisico. It's so beautiful there"
Translation: Oh you did something cool? Hmm, well I did something cool too and i'm going to tell you about it so you think i'm cool too.
The next person then usually retorts back with something like:
"Oh I've heard that, I'm going to go there sometime. LA was great, they have this really cool beach party every Saturday night. You should go there sometime"
Translation: Hmm, he's not understanding that I want him to know i am cool so i will tell him why where I went was cooler than where he went and that he missed out. That should put him in his place and make me seem cooler than him.
Then the original person chimes back in with something they've done and it repeats itself all over again.
One thing that is missing in this first conversation is that no one really asks the other person questions. They just want to talk about themselves, as if it is some kind of interview where you have to sell yourself and your qualities as to why you should be accepted into this group. No one seems to actually WANT to know anything about the other person, they are just using the pauses between when the other person speaks in order to get more info about themselves into the conversation.
Next time you see two strangers start talking, like in an elevator where the conversation lasts less than a minute or two, pay attention and try not to laugh at them. When they leave, you will feel much more superior. Keep it up and you might eventually end up like uzless...soaring high above the idiots down beneath you.
