I need to book a flight. So far I've only needed to book flights to Italy, so Ryanair have always come in very very handy. One cent flights and all, no messing. But this time I'm going a bit further.

I've seen that BA charge £1200 one way. Then I find that on lastminute.com the *same* BA flight costs £550 🙄 but this is still £220 over the cheapest deal available.

The lowest fare is with a Russian airline I've never heard of. Would people suggest taking the cheaper fare or paying a bit more to fly BA? Can I point out that this is expensive for me, and I don't care about flying hotels, just safety and getting to the right place.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

How long is the flight? Does the russian flight have connections? Is the BA flight direct? Is the cheaper BA flight 'return' (can sometimes be the way)?

I'm going for a year so I can't buy a return unless I pay £1.4k for an open one. Just not feasible. I'm not sure but I think the flight is about 10 hours. The Russian one changes at St P'burg, the BA one stops to refuel but it doesn't say where yet.

Thanks

Even so bizarrely you may find a non-open return costs less, you don't necessariy have to use the return flight. If money is a problem and you are a tolerant guy then go for the cheap option. If you're the sort who couldn't stand 10 hours + layover in an airport with only a book to read and maybe crap food/films, go BA.

pay the extra and go with BA. safety first and BA is safer. also probably more comefortable with better service/food.

I wouldn't like it but if somebody offered me £200 to do it once I'd take it, so would most people. And that's the saving.

The problem with a return is that the latest I can book it for is well before I return, and it's costly, and non-refundable should I cancel.

So far it's looking like Pulkovo Airlines.

I would go on the cheaper one. I wouldn't pay more money to fly with someone just because of safety, but that may be just me, being a pilot, I know most airlines are extremely safe.

BTW I noticed Pulkovo says that 97% of their crews are capable of flying in difficult weather. Are they bragging? it should be 100%

thats the kind of thing that would put me off. I know statistically flying is very safe. but some flying is safer than others. (horrible english but never mind).

Comparing the relative safety of airlines is silly, since even the airlines with the highest crash rates are statistically safer than, say, driving. I see no reason not to make decisions about flights solely on the basis of price, unless you fly regularly and want to maintain loyalty to one airline for frequent-flyer miles.

The problem with that is; you can't just be a bit safe, either you're safe or you're not.
I would take the cheap one....and a parachute. 😉
