I vaguely remember listening to classroom debates as to whether Shakespear actually wrote all the literature he was credited with. Frankly I don't know and really didn't care much about it at the time. What I remember very clearly was watching as Ms. Hussey played the role of Juliet, awestruck by her acting skills at age 15 and her beauty. Ms. Hussey is gone now, but it seems there really was a Juliet over 700 years ago, and I found her story just as interesting as the movie.
@mchill
Thanks for that, mchill. Good story.
Shakespeare was not a writer--he was a force of nature. That his plays are still produced is testimony to his profound understanding of human character, our faults as well as our virtues.
It is well to remind people that, in his time, actors were not well regarded. They traveled from town to town, like the circus, and many people considered that acting was not a real profession.
@moonbus saidQueen Elizabeth I's love of art and culture provided favourable conditions for the development of the theater.

@mchill saidRomeo and Juliet was my introduction to Shakespeare in Freshman English in High School, also. I became fascinated by the many layers of the dialogue, which remained similar in every play I read after that.
