What was?
Barry Miles states, "'Trouble Coming Every Day' is arguably the first recorded rap song" (Hippie, p. 140). He offers a similar assertion in Zappa: A Biography (113), where he also characterizes Zappa's early style as "pseudo-Mexican rap" (101).
I'm looking for an argument pro or con, rather than more simple declarations. Is Mile ...[text shortened]... referring to an established opinion of someone other than himself (even if it is wrong)?
Um, I don't know where Mr. Miles got his argument from, but I find it to be silly. Ask yourself, what does Mr. Miles think is a 'rap' song? Is it simply 'rap' because Zappa delivers the vocals in a rhythmic spoken fashion?
Zappa's spoken word is prevalent throughout his works. No one considers him a pioneer in rap music. If the spoken word is the most important ingredient in rap music then Barry Miles would not be accurate, Freak Out was released @1965. The spoken word in song format existed prior to that, however: Peggy Lee-Fever., the Monster Mash, Cab Calloway, Louis Jordan, Babs Gonzalez, Jon Hendrix.
You have to consider rap as an inner city combination of the sampled funky rhytym, the "rap" itself- the message, the culture, absence of harmony, borrowed & sampled short music phrases.
Those ingredience helped establish the art of rap music. Today, is different because we can now apply rap to other idioms. In another words, you can rap to a live band performing instead of samples and turntables, you can incorporate other musical formats more completely and identify that the artist is still "throwing it down." .
I've been around a long time and worn many hats, but for the life of me I cannot see RAP as an art form. Someone please explain to me where the pleasure is when listened to; what the message is we haven,t heard too many times; and what is the artistic ability? Befor you say I'm a racist think again. Rap simply has no qualities.

The corporations that depend and exist because of rap music are probably bigger than McDonald's hamburgers. I don't eat them either, but I know they exist!

I call it Hip-Hop if I like it, and Rap if I don't (which would make "Trouble Coming Every Day" a Hip-Hop song). But, for those that prefer these sounds, I understand there is a distinction; I'm unclear on the nature of the difference (sorta like Miles Davis saying Bitches Brew is not Jazz, perhaps).
