I'm a big fan of freeware computer games. I like the idea that someone cares enough about game-making as a creative work that they produce one with no concern for profit.
Of course, you have to wade through a lot of really bad games to find the gems.
So, what are good freeware games?
I'm going to name one, an easy one because it's absolutely a classic:
Liero
What are some good spots on the Web to find freeware games?
Again, I'll name just one for now:
www.gamehippo.com
Just to broaden the net some, let's include abandonware.

I've downloaded lots of freeware, shareware and so on and haven't had problems with popups or spyware.
I've recently been having a lot of fun with a game called Tumblebugs, available from the king of abandonware websites, The Home of the Underdogs (www.the-underdogs.org). Another good (and frustrating) game is Pendulumania, available from the same site. I believe both of those games are freeware.
Kenta Cho makes very simple, very stylish freeware action games-- my favorite is called "A7Xpg."
On the subject of abandonware, I wasted much of my summer playing Master of Magic once I managed to get it running under WinXP.

What sort of game is Tumblebugs?
I've played Pendulumania some. Very original, I think.
Tumblebugs is a fast-paced "Combat" like hovertank fighting game, with an nice variety of ships and special attacks. It's most fun in multiplayer (same computer-- the view zooms in and out as the two tanks move closer and further apart) but the single-player is fun too. Not very deep, but quite entertaining.
