so, why do words like by, why, rhythm exist? it's cause y is a "half-vowel". although pronounced like "i" as in "I am" or "i" as in "kick", y can be kinda used as a vowel.

Vowels are normally sounds that do not require movement of the tongue to perform, or sharp/heavy aspiration. This is not always the case; many languages have circumflex vowels.
