What is the meaning of the word "friendship" and/or what are the characteristics of a true friend to you?

A person who never lies to or about you would be near the top of my list of the characteristics of a true friend.

They say, that a good friend comes to get you out of jail if need arises. The best friend is there with you.

That tells us about loyality, common interest...

Well said, Stees. In friendship as well as with a romantic relationship the most critical factor is mutual integrity.

Family members and close friends often treat each other in a dichotomy of the best/worst ways imaginable. Wonder why?
