I love words in similar use today as their ancient roots. Not the best example, but off the top of my head the Russian "czar" and German "kaiser" are both derived from "Caesar". The really old ones are fascinating to me.

Here is a ancient city name that I find bizarre: Agedincum (use your imagination). I sure wouldn't want to eat any of their cheeses!

I once read that "churlish" comes from "Charlemagne" which itself would be translated as something like "Charles the Great." Evidently he was not a very sensitive guy.
