Recently i have downloaded 4 rather large databases of games from ICCF. Now, i haven't used any of these yet as I am aware that there are different rules on ICCF regarding engines. As Engine use is permitted in this federation, it stands to reason that a lot of the games would match up with Engines pretty well. Am i allowed to use this source of information or not?

Yes. You are allowed to use databases with engine games in them, Tmetzler told me. However "the impetus would be upon the player to not completely rely upon engine moves".

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard - you can get banned for engine use but copying games where an engine has been used is okay?

Run that past me again?

A bigger quote from Tmetzler:

"Yes, using a database with engine games is legal. However, as Gatecrasher has said, "the impetus would be upon the player to not completely rely upon engine moves" or something like that. The possibility that game after game after game would comprise of engine database moves only is remote."

How long before that statement is out of date?

As soon as computers have played more than half of the possible games of chess. Ask bowmann.

How the hell would i be able to tell which moves have come from an engine? For all i know 50% of the games could have been played between engines. The impetus for me not to rely on engine moves is all well and good, but how can i know the moves i am looking at have come about through engine analysis or not?

I think that pretty much summarizes Bobby's thoughts on the level of chess these days: people memorizing plays instead of playing.

I could be banned for asking a GM to help me with my moves. Does that mean I shouldn't be allowed to consult a GM game in a database?

A database is a database, and a game is a game. If you're allowed to use databases of games between humans, I don't see why you shouldn't be allowed to use databases of games played by engines.

This rule needs to be clarafied. What is to stop someone from creating a database full of all the games played by banned players from this site and using it? The Mod team appear to be saying this would be ok when it sounds like a bit of a contradiction. If one player is banned for their moves, why should another player be able to use those moves inside the rules?

I am not a game mod, but my answer is yes. When your opponent leaves the database you have you will score a "normal" game. I would feel free to use my program's games. Why not? Surely my opponent will not play the same moves that ChessMaster does for the full game.

Don't fully agree James,

Even if you fill your database with thousands of games played by engine's then you do not potentially have the best moves (newer engine's are smarter and make better moves).

Plus there comes the time in every game where the position is going to be unique and then you'll still have to rely on your own skills ...
