Gang Violence Not A Turf War Over Drugs,Say Police.
Tuesday's gang violence is not a turf war over drugs, police say.
Senior sergent Duncan Macleod said Whanganui police had no intelligence. (oppps sorry this sentence carries on)... to suggest the violence, where a Mongrel Mob member was bashed, was a turf war over the methamphetamine drug P.
Mr Macleod said the violence was believed to be retribution for earlier assaults by rival gang members who were in the city after a motorbike convention.
The violence erupted after the two rival gangs met at BP Whanganui East at midday on tuesday and continued at the mobil station on Carlton Ave and at the Whanganui Hospital.
A whanau member confirmed the violence was ongoing gang warfare, which is contrary to Police Association Greg O'Connor's comments on National Radio yesterday that it was an indication of turf war over drugs, particularly methamphetamine.
Yesterday the Whanganui man was transfered to Wellington Hospital in a serious but stable condition where he underwent surgery to release pressure on the brain.
Asked if there was a likelihood of the situation escalating, Mr Macleod said it was unlikely, but Whanganui police are prepared for the worst case scenario.
Mr Macleod said, considering the day's events, Whanganui was quiet on tuesday night with no evidence of gang tensions.
Whanganui police had had leave cancelled and other staff have been called in from within the central districts, Mr Macleod said.
Mr O'conor echoed Mayor Michael Laws' call for a commitment to get rid of gangs in the wake of the gang violence.
Clearly exasperated, both men want more resourses for more police.
The problem was not only gang violence but gang crime and Mr O'Connor said the heads of gangs would be looking to shut down the fallout from the violence as it was bad for their illicit drugs business.
"Whenever gang violence spills over into the street it means they will get police attention that they don't normally get."
Police would like to hear from witnesses who were in or near the Whanganui East BP service station at midday and the Mobil station near the Whanganui Hospital at about 1:30 pm on Tuesday.

the Mongrel Mob and Black Power have a few little feuds over recent times, that no one heard much about. now the Hells Angels want a piece of the action. out come the guns and baseball bats.
I'ld place my bets with the Mob all the way, but hey wouldn't it be interesting if the Mob and the Blacks joined together against the police. Wow, god sure must be busy with all those puppets!
The police could lob in a few tear gas canisters jsut for the fun of it.
The winning gang can then be arrested and locked away for life for the murder of the other gang.
Problem solved, two gangs off the streets and normal people once again happy.

i heard all these rumours out on the town last night, but you got to wonder how much are lies. it was pretty quiet - a calm before the storm ? -
a 17 year old guy got killed. i'm not too sure if he got shot or knifed or how the other one is, but this really sucks. went into town again tonight and it's looking to be getting out of hand. the mayor of our town wants to get rid of the gangs, but hey he don't come from here and it isn't his friends and family who gonna get killed for his MISSION!
still you can't help but admire the mayor. i don't know, but maybe he has a death wish for hell or missing a few empty spaces up there. maybe he just wants to be god... just like YOU!

A week or two ago a guy from White Fence said I could ask him for a favor because I gave him a discount on a digital scale.

no it's in NZ. it prob won't eventuate into much, but i don't know. i wrote up a while ago about a friend who got in a bit of a rumble with about 30 prospectors for the mob... well him and a car load. i had to wonder why nothing gets written up in the paper of the things you know that go on. ...[text shortened]... r for my home town. hope it don't get worse or some of my friends may get dragged into it.
Originally posted by Kaboooombathe rumours i had heard were wrong. a guy that stays with my brother got beaten up by about nine people at a party. he was like the top suspect for murdering the 17 year old. the guy died as he had a bad heart and they reckon him drinking 8 red bulls proberbly contributed to it. he gets' beaten up, becomes a suspect for murder, and then should feel lucky he is going to court for assault. he didn't even hit anyone!

i went on a camping / fishing trip with him and some of my little brother's friends not that long ago. he seems a really nice guy, but life has been cruel to him like so many others. at 13 he had been living on the street and i guess he struggles to trust people. i hope it works out o.k. for him.
not much word hangs on the gangs. silence is in the air.
