One of the people who live in the same building as I do, spilled about a litre of gasoline in the basement. Needless to say this stinks up the place quite a bit. Unfortunately, I live on the ground floor and I can't keep the smell out of my appartment. And if that isn't bad enough, I have a small darkroom in the basement which I can't use now because of the fumes. It doesn't seem very wise to spend a considerable amount of time in the gasoline smell.
Does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of the gasoline odor? The spill happened a few days ago, and I'm afraid the basement floor is porous... . It obviously was an accident, but if I can san share some tips with my neighbour, that might prevent me from getting pissed off.
Thanks,
David

I'll give it a try. But isn't it a problem that it has had a few days time to seep in the floor? (I mean, is the kitty litter still useful now?)

Originally posted by DdVIt sure can't hurt, and it should cover the smell. In a few days, vaccuum it up. If it still smells, just lay out more powder.

!? Can't hurt!
Failing that, you can get the floor sealed?

Light five candles and place them in such a way that the five candles can be linked via a roughly-drawn pentagram.
Pray to the demon of your choice, and ask very nicely for the petrol smell to be taken away (remember to specifically ask for that smell not to be replaced by one of brimstone).
Hey presto! The smell has gone. But you may have lost your eternal soul...
Arm & Hammer pet deodorizer for carpets will work better than plain baking soda in conjunction with the kitty litter. Still it should work even though the gasoline has seeped into the concrete, I use it for solvent spills all the time. The smell is created by vapors becoming airborne, the kitty litter and baking soda based deordorizer will still absorb the vapor particles. While I typically don't bother, scrubbing the spill with soap and water prior to dumping on the kitty litter will lift some of the residue.
